This is also a great time of the year to photograph our local birds. The cardinals are showing their very bright red color and are willing to let you get fairly close before they fly away. I got this cardinal last Friday. Robins are returning in numbers (we had 17 each in back yard on 26 February – did not have a camera handy). One of my favorite bird shots was back on 7 Feb 07, when I was able to capture five Robins drinking from my heated bird bath at the same time. I was just lucky that I had my camera by the window and was able to get the picture before they left in search of a more springtime environment.

I did take the time to go over to Iowa side of Lock and Dam 14 to photograph some eagles last Friday, great day for shooting pictures. The sun was warm (almost fell asleep in my chair) and several eagles were flying around the area (never where I was though). I did get one opportunity to shoot across the service Lock to one eagle perched high in a tree (at least 1000 feet away) – hardly a prize winning picture but still an eagle. Throughout the rest of the time I watched as the eagles would swoop down (normally on the other side of the river) — still a couple hours of real rest and relaxation. I was told by one of the locals that many of the eagles have left the area but I found those hanging around fun to watch and photograph. The site is convenient to parking and if you bring a comfortable lawn chair, a very nice place to enjoy the spring sun and maybe get a GREAT eagle shot.

The Fall is a great time of the year to take pictures. Great Colors and fantastic lighting, especially early in the morning and towards sunset. Time to get creative.
